Womersley, North Yorkshire
Womersley Fruit and Herb Vinegars, founded by Martin and Aline Parsons in 1979, has deservedly built up a fantastic reputation over the years for the quality and versatility of its wonderful fruit and herb vinegars and jellies.
Despite the simplicity of their ingredients (which make them suitable for vegans, vegetarians and those on a gluten-free diet), throughout their range from the rich and hearty blackberry, through the zingy lime, black pepper and lavender, to the simply amazing golden raspberry and apache chilli, their vinegars are lauded by professional chefs and keen cooks alike. One taste, and you'll know why!
Their jellies, too, whether an unusual flavour rarely seen today, such as apple and geranium, or a more traditional flavour such as apple and rosemary or apple and lavender are ingredients, and not just condiments - try adding a dollop inside home-made fishcakes, or stirring a spoonful into a gravy or stew to give a burst of fruity, herby, flavour.
The succession of Rupert, Martin and Aline's son, to the running of Womersley in 2009 saw changing times for the brand. Their range of products was slimmed down to eight vinegars - three with plain fruit and five with fruit and herb - and four apple and herb jellies, and the bottles were completely rebranded in a stunning design which cleverly incorporates on the outside of the bottle designs inspired by the ingredients inside the bottle.
Womersley was, without a doubt, one of the very first brands which we knew we'd have to have in The Yorkshire Pantry when we first conceived of the store, and it's a continuing source pleasure to see the delight on customers' faces when they try one of their fruit vinegars for the first time and see their faces light up with the burst of fruitiness that takes them completely by surprise.
